THEME: Tropical Princess
RACE: Human
COSTUME CONCEPT: A mysterious rainforest on an island ends into a waterfall and encased in an ocean
DETAILS: Gathered inserts, flowers
COLOR SCHEME: Forest green, violet, true-blue

DESCRIPTION:

Tropical Princess costume really emphasizes on islands in a very elegant perspective. I used a lot of details and shades of blue to give the costume contrast and soft/hard appearance. Every single detail represents the concept clearly as well. I designed a fitted strapless sheath dress with gathered inserts sewn on the bottom to give the dress flare and style. It's green, with detailing of violet designs on the chest, stomach and below the belt. The princess is also wearing a flower-petal collar starting in the lower back exactly were the back of the dress starts and going around towards the center front. Her head is supposed to represent a flower of some sort with her "head" actually being the bud and sprouting...which is why her hair is so tall and texturized. The hair is also a substitute for a crown...instead of wearing a crown, which would look too man-made in a tropical environment, her hair acts as the crown and is styled elaborately to satisfy her superior status. Below the flower...you have a rainforest which is basically green with flowers and plants. I made the plants all be violet and I gave an intricately designed pattern on the chest and below the belt to show the rainforest slowly ending. I chose violet because violet was once worn by many royalties in history because it was the most expensive fabric and color to purchase. It also showed mystics and power which is what was needed to represent here as a princess and as a royalty. The rainforest into the waterfall which I showed using elegantly gathered rectangular inserts which acts as a custom flare for the dress. The gathers give it texture which is what the appearance of water has...water has waves and calm soothing effects. The whole island is surrounded by the ocean which is how it usually is on a map. To represent the ocean encasing the rainforest and waterfall, I designed a sheer robe which would go over her body, but only above her elbow area so it has a softer appearance and gives the flower-collar a clear showing. The robe also has gathered inserts from the collar, down to the floor. The inserts are darker colored to represent waves of the ocean, while the sheerness represents elegance and a calm side.

Alright, if the dress were actually constructed in real life for Broadway, it would still be functional. Like I said, I still thought it about it. The flare at the bottom isn't even. The seam for the flares starts on the left side more higher up the dress than the right...which runs lower. It gives style, and leg-space. Unfortunately, its not too well received because fashion sketches are usually done exaggerated...and for this costume contest, I wanted to have maximum "presentation"...cuz were not making these garments, just drawing them. And since im VSing all these graphic talents, I wanted the costumes to look more like art than clothing, however...its still wearable for the costume scene.

Just remember the dress is stretched out/elongated to fit a desired illustrative style. In reality, a photograph of the dress wouldn't be as tall and can be seem more clearly to be wearable.

The dress also isn't for Broadway...if I designed costumes for broadway, I would design a dress that can wearable for dancing, moving and acrobatics. This is "royalty"...and vulgarity in terms of royalty for my inspiration could range from not wearing a collar the right way...to dancing and jumping about. Things have to be formal and set, and this was my point of view which wasn't for broadway, but for royalty.

Is the material strech? Because if it wasn't it would be EXTREMELY difficult to walk. Is the sheer bluse fabric chiffon? All in all, i really like it. Your Houte Couture is finominal (did not spell correctly.)

Definately not stretch or else the costume would be tacky...with a capital T, lol. (Nick's words)

Anyways, wearability shouldn't really factor into costume design. Especially for royalties...for people who wear gowns like we wear underwear, I did get inspired by the Elizabethan time period were women always wore fitted corsets with sleek skirts and trains. Back then, and now...royal costumes and royal attire is never comfortable to anyone but them cuz there so used to wearing it. However, again...this is just make believe and I still made sure the designs are functional and not just portraits to look at.
